Cycling/Interuptions – Explained

HCG – This Article Inspired Me To Cycle;

I understood when making this choice that there was a possibility that stabilizing would be a uphill climb.I admit that I am a impatient person. I also want to point out that I respect and admire the HCGers that choose to do the rounds and breaks correctly as protocol is designed. Patience IS a virtue … I decided on the “fast track”…But hey, they (meaning me) don’t call me “lab rat” for nothing 😉 – Colleen

Here is another HCGer’s journey –

I have been getting lots of questions on cycling lately. It’s not something that I can give a short answer to (is anything ever in my world?) so I decided to write an article about it. There are several things that come into play that made me decide to do what I assumed would be my “final” round in cycles.

There are more than a few things that come into play – and these are things that I have personally come up with having months on months of PURIST PROTOCOL under my belt, along with rounds that totaled 8 weeks (1st Round), 6 weeks (2nd Round), 3 weeks (3rd Round) and 4 weeks (4th Round) before I even considered doing things this way.

Why do I say that? I get questioned sometimes about my pulling away from Dr. Simeon’s book, and what gives me that right? First, I have the right because I did 4 rounds (total of 21 weeks with a loss of 98.8 lbs) following his protocol to a “T” – I have the supporting data to find out what works and what doesn’t for me and I have used that information to make informed decisions on my own “self doctoring” path that I have chosen in My HCG Journey.

In looking over how I arrived at the decision to spend my 5th round in cycles, I considered the following:

      Head in the Game

      Minimum Course

      Unforeseen Interruptions

      P3 Breaks

    Jump Start Losses

Let’s go over this ONE by ONE.

Head in the Game

I wrote an article and in it was discussed the whole MIND GAME routine we play with ourselves and how it relates to the protocol. I have found that it is EASY PEASY to commit to a “short round” and have the OPTION of making it longer, than trying to do this long butt round and being disappointed in the results. So since I knew what the MINIMUM course was – I figured I could be on HCG for 3 weeks at a time. Ah, so then my next point logically is this:

Minimum Course

In his book Pounds and Inches, Dr. Simeon’s says this under “Duration of Treatment”:

We never give a treatment lasting less than 26 days, even in patients needing to lose only 5 pounds. It seems that even in the mildest cases of obesity the diencephalon requires about three weeks rest from the maximal exertion to which it has been previously subjected in order to regain fully its normal fat-banking capacity. Clinically this expresses itself in the fact that when in these mild cases treatment is stopped as soon as the weight is normal, which may be achieved in a week, it is much more easily regained than after a full course of 23 injections.

So it stands to reason that you can do a SHORT course as per his instructions with NO issues. In doing SHORT cycles like this, you will then ward off any possibility of “Immunity” that Dr. Simeon’s talks about in his book. In any case, I have my thoughts on IMMUNITY as well; in so much as it is NOT the factor that Dr. Simeon’s thought it was in his day. The unfortunate thing is that Dr. Simeon’s passed long before he could complete his research – but really, this is a thought for another day.

So we have established that 3 week cycles are AOK – now what about the breaks? Let’s look at what Dr. Simeon’s says about “Unforeseen Interruptions”:

Unforeseen Interruptions

Unforeseen Interruptions of Treatment

If an interruption of treatment lasting more than four days is necessary, the patient must increase his diet to at least 800 Calories by adding meat, eggs, cheese, and milk to his diet after the third day, as otherwise he will find himself so hungry and weak that he is unable to go about his usual occupation. If the interval lasts less than two weeks the patient can directly resume injections and the 500-Calorie diet, but if the interruption lasts longer he must again eat normally until he has had his third injection.

When a patient knows beforehand that he will have to travel and be absent for more than four days, it is always better to stop injections three days before he is due to leave so that he can have the three days of strict dieting which are necessary after the last injection at home. This saves him from the almost impossible task of having to arrange the 500 Calorie diet while en route, and he can thus enjoy a much greater dietary freedom from the day of his departure. Interruptions occurring before 20 effective injections have been given are most undesirable, because with less than that number of injections some weight is liable to be regained. After the 20th injection an unavoidable interruption is merely a loss of time.

In other words, he says there would be situations that would be needed to be considered where you had to take a break, you would have to have AT LEAST 800 calories and that if the interruption was LESS than 14 days you go straight back into VLCD with your first dose of HCG, but if it were LONGER than 14 days you would eat NORMALLY for two days with HCG and then the THIRD DAY would be a VLCD day with a dose of HCG. And he also tells us that after the 20th injection, you are pretty safe – so are you beginning to see my line of reasoning in my breaks?

I have chosen to keep my breaks while I am CYCLING this round to between 7 – 10 days long each. That is my choice. But you have until the 21st day on a break for it still to be considered a cycle because anything MORE than that would be an ENTIRE PHASE 3 break, and your round would be complete. A round is a COMPLETE Phase 2 and a COMPLETE Phase 3 – and then however many days you decide to do in Phase 4 – anything less than that it becomes a cycle (or it does in my world!).

So then, what happens when I am breaking for 7 – 10 days?

P3 Breaks

You have to follow the same procedure as you do with a regular P3 break; you do it with NO sugars and NO starches. This cycling thing is not for the faint of heart, no ma’am. You must maintain during the short break or your time will be wasted. Believe me, I speak from experience. This last short break I took has been the best so far since I started cycling, as I have lost a total of 7 pounds in 7 days. I started at only 2.4 over my LIW – and within 48 hours I was already below LIW and into “virgin territory”. Let me illustrate:

From LIW which was on August 18 (148.2) till today, September 9 (143.6) I have lost a total of 4.6 lbs in 21 days, of which only 10 of those days were VLCD, the other 11 days were spent maintaining and eating pretty much how I want. 4.6 lbs in 21 days on ANY weight loss program is pretty sweet. When you consider the loss of 4.6 lbs in 10 VLCD days? Well then, that is even MORE sweet. In other words, it WORKS for me.

Last but not least, as with anyone with a bunch of data behind them, they know one thing for sure:

LOSSES ARE BETTER AT THE BEGINNING OF A ROUND

Yup! I didn’t have to tell you this did I? I like those monster losses at the beginning and my head is way more into the game then, so why should I suffer? At first, I was like everyone else, afraid this wouldn’t work after the first time, but here I am over 100 lbs lost later, and it is STILL working. So that being said, that is why I chose to CYCLE.

Hi Colleen, I have so much enjoyed all the information I am getting from you on your website while I am on HCG. I have lost about 10 pounds from my first round, gained some back and am on p2 again and my goal is to lose 5 or so more pounds. I will have been on hcg p2 for 10 days before going to grandma’s with family for 3 days and was hoping that i could just eat clean (as much as i can) while away and then get back on to finish my 23rd day of taking the drops. I am so encouraged in what you have found in your cycle info. Do you have any tips on what to eat and how to deal with family who want you to eat what they are eating?

    Bless you!

    Renee Reese

      Hi Renee,

Thank you for all your encouragement. The word “allergy” goes a long way!
I have a sister-in law that decided to be vegan. as soon As she says it is because she discovered that she was effected adversely by dairy, meat, wheat, etc. no one wants to cross her.
if she says anything else people want to challenge her, if she says allergy everyone steps aside – LOL – i know go figure…But bottom line it works without any questions – YAY!!!
NOW it is up to you to have the willpower while you are with your family. If you go opposite of what you told them they wont believe your excuse.

Good luck and I wish you lots of STRENGTH!!!
      Colleen =)

Hi Colleen, I’m still a little confused as to when I can begin a second round. Does your version of cycling basically help you get from round to round? I’m on R1P4D2 (total of 18 lbs lost) and keep seeing conflicting advice of when to start a second round and how long it should last. The website that I purchased my drops from has a 15 day plan while other sites say at least 21 days. I’m thinking that I want to lose about 10 more lbs to be at the ideal weight for my frame since I still have a good amount of belly fat (I hold most of my weight in my chest and stomach).

I’ve read that you can start a second round right after P3, I’ve seen that you should do 3 weeks of Phase 4 first, and then I’ve also seen that you should stay off the drops for as long as you were on them (43 days for me). Can you offer me some advice on how you chose to proceed?

    • colleen says:

      Hi Ayana,
I only did injections so I don’t know how close the drops are when it comes to being the same as what is recommended for injections. The thing about cycling or an interruption is it is a choice you will need to make for yourself. Dr Simeon’s reason for an interruption was in case the patient couldn’t follow proper protocol because of a business trip or something like that. The reason why the time between the rounds is important is because that is the time your body gets use to it’s new weight “set point” so gaining weight back in the future won’t be easy like it is when you do other diets.I knew that when i made the choice to cycle that I would have to be a lot more strict when it came time to do phase 3 etc. And that I would have to treat that phase just as serious as I did VLCD. Giving in to my impatience was a gamble fortunately it worked out for me. But I highly respect the HCGers that follow the proper steps when it comes to time duration of the phases. The original protocol stated that the shortest round you could do is the 23 day round. The 15 day plan you mentioned is not something I have heard of. Have you read pounds and inches? Once you read the manuscript it gives you a good understanding why it is so different than other plans and why it is able to do so much more than others in the past. I hope this helps.

    Hi Colleen,

I realize it’s a long time ago that Ayana asked her question, but I think she was referring to the breaks in between rounds, not the duration of actual rounds. I have read similar things. How long did you go between rounds, did you do P4 before starting another round?

TY – and what amazing results 🙂

    • colleen says:

As you read in my reply to Ayana I decided to “cycle”. So I would take breaks and do P3 for up to either 14 or less than 20 so i wouldn’t need to load. I didn’t do P4 (I know call me a rebel) but I also knew with making that decision I would have to be a lot more careful as i entered into maintenance and treat that like a food plan for awhile as well to help lock in my new “set point weight”.

Hello and a huge THANK YOU for your honesty and help. I have a question about your first round. You say you did it for 8 weeks and that you followed the protocol as a purist. I am doing the drops which I realize is a different method thn you used. 8 weeks? Really all at one go? I thought that was against the protocol as it was only 40 days. I am excited, seeing good releases and would like to stretch this out as long as possible without stopping completely. I am also impatient. I hope I am not prying, but I would love the details of your first round, its end and how you moved on to round 2. I have watched the vlogs and they were good, but I am still unclear. I began at 165 and am down 11 pounds, in day 14 of a 40 day cycle. Please advise me as I am stoked and wanting to continue releasing! Thanks so much! G

    • colleen says:

      Hi Gretchen,
      Congrats on your releases!
2010 seems so long ago for me now, I had to dig up my old journal from back then so I could be sure to answer you correctly.
I started my HCG journey on Jan 17, 2010. Feb 27, 2010 I decided to do P3. My first P3 was a complete blunder (I did a vlog at the time explaining what I did wrong). So on March 9th I started VLCD round 2.lately I have been talking to someone who I highly respect and know does a lot of research all in the quest to help people lose fat without losing muscle. Even though I didn’t choose short rounds during my journey based on what I know now the “21” theory makes a lot of sense so your body doesn’t adapt. I have been experimenting with a combo of supplements and the 21 day theory came into play with that too.I probably just gave you more to be confused about (I hope not).
      Colleen 🙂

Hello again! Thanks so much for answering me. I have a few more questions. I am a regular gym attendee, sadly with lots of chub to release. I lift heavily about every 3 days so your comments are really exciting to me. I do not want to lose the muscle I have been working for almost a year acquiring. What is the “21” theory? Where can I find information on this. I am so delighted with HCG. I have gone down 2.5 more pounds since I typed to you, with a heavy lifting day yesterday. Please know I am so grateful to you and respect you more than you can know! I look so forward to hearing from you. Thanks again!!! G

        • colleen says:

          Hi Gretchen,

There isn’t much you can research on the 21 theory Yet. It simply boils down to the logic that our body figures us out on just about everything when we do something for 21 days. I want to do a post about it but like I said when I tried to research further for examples but there wasn’t much to go by except of course it takes 21 days to either break a bad habit or create a good one. The rest of it is going by the experiment I’m helping with and the supplements involved. So basically the “theory” is to keep your body from adapting to what you are doing to it. Because it is my gut instinct that this makes a lot of sense and I respect the person I am helping (with the experiment) I can only offer my thoughts on it. But I definitely cant say you need to follow along.
It is great you are serious about keeping your muscle! If you have a method to analysis your fat percent that will really help you as you progress, especially since you are lifting heavy weights.
As we all know muscle weighs more that fat and if you only have a basic scale a slow release could get misinterpreted. I know for me personally if the number on the scale isn’t what I want to see the only thing that will help me is to know my fat percent and BMI.
          C.

I have been on p2 vlcd for 30 days tomorrow. I am going to do a planned interruption and go into P3 Friday for 4 days. I don’t want to gain anything back. What should I eat. Protein and fats only? Also I was planning on doing 10-15 more injections to finish this round. Is this correct? Thanks for all your information. Btw, I’ve followed protocol to a T. No cheats. Thanks 🙂

    • colleen says:

      Hi Tasha,
On your interruption it is best to stick with protein, veggies, and low glycemic fruit. Stay clear from starches and sweets. If you are doing the interruption because of an event and some the those foods are part of the reason then just be frugal with your selections.
Great job on your discipline with protocol!
      Colleen 🙂

      • Tasha says:

I’m not gonna cheat. It’s a 4 day weekend with the family and our anniversary 18 years so I want to have a nice steak dinner with my husband. I have about 5.8lbs to goal but I want to get it off as soon as possible. I’ll stick to P3 foods for sure:-) Should I not do any fat? Grass fed butter, coconut oil and was hoping for bullet proof coffee and a little cream. Do you think that’s ok? If not then I won’t. Thanks again. I’ve been watching you videos for a while and you make me lol:-)
